The city of Murfreesboro was first established under the name Cannonsburgh in 1811 to serve as the county seat of Rutherford County. Shortly after, however, the city was renamed to Murfreesboro and served as the capital of Tennessee from 1818 until 1926. Murfreesboro was the site of a major battle during the Civil War in 1862, called the Battle of Stones River or the Battle of Murfreesboro.
